First Principles

Hebrews 6:1-2 lists the elementary teachings about Christ. In Assemblies of God circles they have been known as the First Principles. This booklet can be used to teach them in eight lessons under the headings outlined in the Contents. The lessons follow a natural progression. They relate in chronological order to events believers experience. Chapters 1 and 2 have to do with salvation, 3-6 are about our walk with God while 7 & 8 are concerned with the next life. The lessons are are by no means exhaustive. Controversial subjects have been excluded in this introductory course. Discussions about the intermediate state of the dead, the the great tribulation or the timing of the rapture should best be avoided. The class should preferably be taught by someone who is well versed in the Bible and able to answer difficult questions. The doctrines can be made more relevant to learners by examples from the teacher's own experience. It needs to be emphasised that the lessons are about Christ. Those attending these sessions are assumed to have had some experience of the living Christ, or at least to believe that Jesus is the Son of God. Seekers who do not as yet have that confidence might do better by first investigating the reliability of the Bible and the claims of Jesus. Contents 1. Repentance from dead works 2. Faith toward God 3. Baptism into Christ and in water 4. Baptism in the Holy Spirit 5. Baptism in suffering 6. Laying on of hands 7. Resurrection of the dead 8. Eternal judgement
