The Mahler Family Letters
Gustav Mahler
The Mahler Family Letters reproduces and annotates 500 letters written between 1880 and 1910 from Mahler to his parents and siblings and to and from various family members. The letters form the largest and most important source of information about Mahler's early life, personality, and relationships. They document such things as his burgeoning musical career, family events and crises, opinions of significant contemporaries, his campaign to become Director ofthe Vienna Hofoper, and his courtship of Alma Schindler. Most of the letters are previously unpublished, and all have been commented on by McClatchie.
