Riccardo Muti
July 2021 brings the 80th birthday of the Italian conductor Riccardo Muti. Passion, precision and fidelity to the score have always been hallmarks of his interpretations. He first rose to major international prominence 50 years ago, in August 1971, when he made his debut at the Salzburg Festival. The New York Times, naming him "one of the last lions of podium glamour", has described him as "a charismatic Italian who can draw the best from musicians".
The recordings in this monumental 91-CD box bear witness to Muti's long and loyal associations with the Wiener Philharmoniker, Philharmonia Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra and Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala, Milano, and to his status as an honoured guest with the Berliner Philharmoniker and Symphonie-Orchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks.
Focusing on orchestral, choral and vocal works, the collection spans the period from 1973 to 2007 and encompasses a rich and varied repertoire. It also features an audio documentary, made in 2020, celebrating Muti's outstandingly productive period with the Philharmonia.
