Gene Stratton-Porter
The protagonist is an adult orphan, less than twenty years old, with bright red hair and freckled complexion. His right hand was missing on his wrist, and he hasn't remembered since then. He has spoken English since he grew up in an orphanage in Chicago, with a slight Irish accent, "clear enough to be called Brock."Depleted following quite a while of strolling and resembling a vagabond, he goes after a position with the Grand Rapids amble organization, guarding lumber in the Limberlost Swamp. McLean, part proprietor, coordinator and field chief of the enormous organization, and captivated with the Limberlost, is intrigued by the kid's affable self-assuredness and recruits him in spite of his childhood and incapacity.
