For Hugh, home is a constant reminder of his mother's depression, leaving him a young carer for his little brother. But then he discovers a homeless man, Gamel, and his strange horse in the woods by his house, and is soon captivated by their mysterious world.
Help in return for help, that's what he's offered; Although it soon becomes more, when Hugh strikes a friendship with Gamel that provides an escape from his difficult home life. But the man and his horse are far from what they appear, and the secrecy he's now bound to could have deadly consequences.
The more he's drawn in, the harder it is to let go of a world where the impossible becomes real. Can Hugh find them a permanent home? Or will he fail to disentangle himself before someone else falls victim to the Nykur.
Nykur is the debut novel by author and poet, Gemma Iversen. Combining personal themes, it is a dark exploration of both ancient creatures from folklore, and the boundaries of friendship and family.
