British War correspondent Edward Thompson travels to India after the murder of General O'Dwyer in London. Edward's journey takes him to Amritsar to visit Jalllianwala Bagh the site of the 1919 massacre and then to Lahore where he witnesses the birth of a new nation. In Karachi, Edward meets in real life "Midnight Pearl" the woman who appears to him in visions and dreams throughout his sojourn on the Subcontinent. On an epic emotional and spiritual journey, Edward rediscovers himself within the vast historical, cultural and spiritual landscape of India. At the same time must reconcile the ongoing presence of the British in India. This novel is sympathetic towards the experience of the Indian population through the final days of the British colonisation of India and during the Partition of India and Pakistan. The juxtaposition of the British in India and the forces sweeping through Europe during WWII is not lost on the main characters as they intersect in the great cauldron of cultures.
